R. Kelly’s sentencing includes more than just prison time.
The R&B singer was sentenced to 30 years in prison on Wednesday, June 29, after being convicted on all nine counts in his high-profile sex trafficking case. When he is released, he will be subject to a new set of conditions and will undergo mental health counseling.
According to documents obtained by TMZ, the 55-year-old R&B legend’s treatment will include therapy for an unspecified sexual disorder. He must also avoid any contact with anyone under the age of 18.
He must also inform anyone who lives with him that he is a sex offender. He will only be allowed to be around someone under the age of 18 if they are a family member or in a therapeutic setting with a “responsible adult” present. His probation officer would have to approve any situation.
R. Kelly was also ordered to pay a $100,000 fine and given five years of supervised release by U.S. District Judge Ann Donnelly. Kelly insists on his innocence and intends to appeal his conviction.
During the court hearing, R. Kelly’s accusers took the stand and emotionally recounted their decades of sexual and physical abuse. “You made me do things that broke my spirit. I literally wished I would die because of how low you made me feel,” one survivor said.
R. Kelly, who will be in his 80s by the time of his release, could face additional prison time and restrictions if convicted in his federal trial in Chicago on Aug. 15, where he is charged with child pornography and obstruction of justice. He also faces other state sex crime charges in Illinois, as well as allegations of prostitution with a minor in Minnesota.
