A biopic about the contentious career of the short-lived 1980s pop duet Milli Vanilli is officially in the works, bringing one of music history’s most scandalous events to the big screen for the first time.
The German pop duo Milli Vanilli, who were embroiled in a lip-syncing controversy that rocked the music business, saw a huge rise and an infamous collapse, which will be thoroughly examined in the upcoming film “Girl You Know It’s True.”
The much-anticipated biopic about the contentious career of Milli Vanilli is currently in production, according to @HollywoodReporter.
The first pictures of the actors playing group members Fabrice Morvan and the late Robert Pilatus have just been made public. The song “Girl You Know It’s True,” which bears the group’s 1989 hit’s name, is said to explain the circumstances surrounding Milli Vanilli’s formation, including the group’s meteoric success and eventual fall from grace after it was discovered they lip-synced their entire album and lost their 1990 Grammy Award for Best New Artist.
Elan Ben Ali and Tijan Njie are set to star as Fabrice Morvan and Robert Pilatus, the fake group that was created by music producer Frank Farian.
Screenwriter Simon Verhoeven, spoke about the upcoming biopic and what he hopes audiences take away from the project. “It not only tells the spectacular rise of two underdogs making it to the zenith of showbiz within one summer, it also gives a fascinating glimpse behind the scenes of that illusory world of fame and its sometimes tragic and unscrupulous machinations. Personally, I think Rob and Fab did not deserve to become the sole scapegoats of this scandal.”
Robert Pilatus and Fabrice Morvan both made unsuccessful comeback attempts, and Pilatus was later found dead in 1998 from what was thought to be an alcohol and drug overdose. Almost immediately, Milli Vanilli was written off by the music industry and turned into a running joke. Filming for “Girl You Know It’s True” is presently ongoing and is scheduled to end in December.
Jasmin Davis, the late John Davis’s daughter, and Brad Howell, the real Milli Vanilli, served as the movie’s associate producers. Todd Headlee’s former assistant, Carmen Pilatus, sister of the late Rob Pilatus.
