We are just coming to the end of the women month celebration and we can comfortably say this year’s celebration is the best ever. There are so many women who are yet uncelebrated but with the achievements we have seen, it is evident that women indeed deserve to be showered more accolades.
The black community should be more grateful as its women have been at the forefront in several industries, breaking and setting records, and dominating whole fields. Hollywood, fashion, makeup, music, and several other sectors have seen African women take over.
In this article, we celebrate our very own African women who have taken over the global entertainment scene.
The three Somali Models
Halima Aden, Ikram Abdi Omar, and Amina Adan have hit the global model scene from their birth country, Somalia. They are renowned for wearing hijabs on the runway, an act which initially attracted loads of criticism. Despite these, they pressed on and have recently been recognized, making their way to the cover of the April Issue of Vogue Africa. They are the first hijabi models to cover the magazine and they have taught us religion is not a barrier to making our dreams reality.
Adesuwa Etomi Wellington
Since hitting the screens after her return to her birth country Nigeria, Susu, as she is fondly called has become one of the most-loved actresses on the continent. Only last month she made the cover of Vogue that celebrated female actresses and she was also nominated by Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Awards in the favorite African Star category.
Wanuri Kahiu
Wanuri was banned from working in her home country but she has not been deterred by those challenges. She has gone ahead to break into Hollywood, snapping up three major deals that have shot her straight to the limelight. She signed a deal with Universal Studios to direct the adaptation of the bestseller, “The Thing About Jellyfish.” By the way, her LGBT movie hits the cinemas very soon.
Nnedi Okorafor
Nnedi is a Nigerian Sci-Fi writer who isn’t new to the global entertainment scene. She is widely regarded as the Queen of Sci-Fi. The writer turned her fans into literal Oliver Twists after she made rounds for writing Black Panther comics. She is currently working with Viola Davis and Wanuri Kahiu on the much-anticipated series, Wild Series.
