Emma Thompson, an 88-year-old African American woman from Montgomery County, Maryland, was recently honored for her extraordinary 33 years of service as a foster parent. Since the 1990s, Thompson has cared for over 30 children, and now, she plans to retire.

The recognition event, held on the last day of Foster Parent Appreciation Month, saw many of Thompson’s former foster children gather to celebrate her remarkable contributions. Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich praised Thompson’s unwavering dedication, according to 11Alive.

“College graduates, business owners, medical professionals, and accomplished athletes all came out of her house,” Elrich said, highlighting Thompson’s “amazing, generous heart.”

Thompson, who has two biological children, has also formally adopted two of the children she fostered. She plans to retire once the child currently in her care graduates from high school.

“You have a lot to be proud of,” Elrich told Thompson. “You’ve quietly made a significant difference in the lives of dozens of children.”

In recognition of her tireless dedication and profound impact, Thompson was presented with a certificate of appreciation. Her contributions have left a lasting legacy, nurturing the lives of countless children in need and helping them to achieve their full potential.
