Halloween is celebrated yearly with people wearing different costumes in the most colorful manner. Well, a mother’s creativity received some serious backlash whipping up a crazy storm on social media. Why? She thought it will be great to dress her son in fake chains and welts for the school Halloween party.

The mother, Sabrina Flor, posted the pictures on her social media page with the caption, “When your son really gets into character. Let’s do it the Brazilian way.”

She painted her son black and then added a white loincloth, topping it with some chains around his hands and ankles. She also painted welt marks on his back that looked like marks from whip lashes. Sabrina Flor lives in North East Brazil, precisely Natal.

In another comment, she said, “Don’t bother to read Brazilian history books, they say there was black slavery in the country, but that’s a lie.” In reaction to the comments on the pictures, she said she did not understand why people raised a storm as she was not racist nor were the pictures posted with such intention.

The school has reacted to the situation by distancing itself from Sabrina’s actions. In their statement they said, “Sadly, the choice of Halloween costume by the student’s family has touched a historical wound in our country. Up to today, (Brazil) is still suffering the consequences of that period. We don’t incite or condone racism or prejudice. (Our school) follows the principles of inclusion and coexistence reflecting the diversity in our region and our teaching practices.”
