In Botswana, there are laws and forbidden things and it is expected that citizens and visitors adhere to these laws.

DRUGS

The use of drugs without proper prescription, is prohibited and drug trafficking is illegal in Botswana. This is seen as a big crime and punishable. If you’ve any reason to travel with drugs, make sure your prescriptions are certified.

Ensure you’ve your identity card with you. Do not forget to move about with it, as a visitor, your identification is very important.

 PHOTOGRAPHS

Taking photographs of military or government building is forbidden. Permission should be taken.

As a visitor, it is not out of place to ask questions, always ask questions, the locals are very friendly and always willing to assist with explanations.

ANIMAL TROPHY

It is illegal to possess or remove any living or dead animal, without a government permit. It is forbidden to take an animal trophy without authorised permission.

With many animals in Africa struggling to survive against poachers, it’s best to avoid purchasing these items.

DRESSING

Camouflage isn’t allowed; be careful not to disobey this law. Although Botswana has no particular dress code, dress responsibly.

At lodges or hotels, Western norms tend to apply. However, when you’re out and about, dressing modestly for your comfort and that of the locals. This goes for men as well as for women; and is especially important if you are going to a government office.
