NBA superstar and Olympic gold medalist Joel Embiid may soon be wearing different colors on the world stage. The Philadelphia 76ers center, who recently clinched his first Olympic gold with Team USA at the 2024 Paris Games, has hinted that he might represent his home country of Cameroon in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. This revelation follows news that Embiid is set to receive one of Cameroon’s highest honors—Commander of the Order of Valor—by the Cameroonian government.

The 30-year-old NBA MVP, originally from Cameroon, has emerged as one of basketball’s most dominant players. Despite his success with Team USA, Embiid recently suggested in an interview with BleacherSpor that his Olympic journey might take a new direction. “Paris was incredible, but L.A. might not be with Team USA; it might be with Cameroon,” Embiid shared, hinting at a potential shift in national allegiance.

This possibility comes as Cameroon prepares to honor Embiid for his contributions to sports. The country’s Minister of Sports and Physical Education, following directives from President Paul Biya, will bestow the prestigious Commander of the Order of Valor medal upon Embiid as part of Cameroon’s 52nd National Unity Day celebrations. The award ceremony will take place in the Ministry’s conference room and is scheduled for 4 p.m.

The official statement from Cameroon’s Ministry of Sports reads: “The Minister of Sports and Physical Education has the honor to inform the public that he will preside over the award ceremony of the Commander of the Order of Valor medal, exceptionally awarded by the President of the Republic, His Excellency Paul Biya, as part of the 52nd National Unity Day, to Mr. Joel Hans Embiid, NBA Basketball player and gold medalist at the recent Paris 2024 Olympic Games with the American basketball team.”

However, the decision to honor Embiid has sparked debate and mixed reactions within Cameroon. While many celebrate his global success, others feel that his decision to represent the USA instead of his birth country in the 2024 Olympics was a betrayal. Critics argue that it is inappropriate to bestow such a distinguished award on someone who initially chose to play for another nation. This sentiment was echoed during the Paris Olympics when Embiid was booed by French fans, as he had initially considered representing France before ultimately joining Team USA.

Despite the controversy, Embiid remains focused on his game and the potential of inspiring young athletes in Cameroon. He views his potential return to represent his home country as an opportunity to contribute to the development of basketball in Africa. “I’ve always carried Cameroon in my heart, and if the time is right, I’d be proud to wear that jersey in 2028,” Embiid stated in the interview.
