Love story from the Groom

Hmmm… Our love story is a unique one oh.

Prior to meeting my wife, I was at the verge of giving up. I had tried a couple of relationships that didn’t work out, hence I decided to just be on my own.

I’m an usher in my church (RCCG, City of David) and on this faithful Tuesday service in church (we call it digging for gold service), I left my office and came to church early, so the head usher posted me to officiate at the middle aisle.

So, while I was in that position, we started the opening prayers and during that time, a mutual friend of my wife, and I whose name is Adebanke, was watching the service online far away in Jamaica, and she saw me while the service was on. I was later asked to change the aisle I was initially after 10minutes of the service due to some reasons, but God had already done what He had to do within that space of time.

Met My Wife Through A Mutual Friend

And so, i got home after the Sunday service and Adebanke chatted me on whatsapp with an international number. It was not saved in my phone. At first, I didn’t know it was her because it had been a very long time we spoke. I later got to know she was the one and she told me that she saw me during the service when I was officiating in the middle aisle and that she used to watch my church services online. She then started asking me about my love life, asking me of the lucky girl in my life. I told her that there was nobody on board, that I was just about giving up, that I was tired of unproductive relationships and do not have time for it anymore.

Hmmm… God used Adebanke as a vessel to bringing my wife into my life. For this, I am grateful.

She told me that she has a friend who is not based in Nigeria, but she’s a lovely lady I’d love to meet, that her Dad is a Pastor in RCCG. I felt she said that simply because she knew that I’d be interested hearing that, but really, I wasn’t interested at all.

I told Adebanke that I do not like distance relationship and wouldn’t want to embark on it. She sent pictures of my wife and asked me to pray about it.

Getting To Know Each Other

Actually, the pictures Adebanke sent were not attractive enough to convince me. My Baby wasn’t looking like my perfect spec. I must say and I nearly missed it, but I thank God I didn’t. I thank God.

So, after praying and staying for about a month, I chatted Adebanke to give me my wife’s phone number, that I’ve made up my mind to at least initiate a conversation with her and be her friend.

I collected her number and then put a call through to her. Both of us continued on whatsapp afterwards and we became addicted to each other. We were chatting and also doing video call virtually everyday.

We had our ups and downs, and at some point, I nearly backed out. I got really stressed and was no longer interested, knowing that I hadn’t seen her – only seeing on whatsapp, and was as if I was just wasting my time. But, the grace of God made me hold on and believe that it was going to work. I also encouraged my wife and tried my best to convince her to believe in me.

It took her about 10months of communicating with her before she could agree to have a relationship with me.

Meeting My Wife Physically

To fast track the whole story, we were getting along well. I wanted to travel to meet her in September 2018. However, I couldn’t because of work in my office. Hence she agreed to come to Nigeria instead after 6 years of being out.

We started making preparations and she finally came home on 4th May, 2019. It was on a Saturday, I couldn’t hold myself. I went to her family house in Lagos exactly the day she got in, it was in the evening and she needed to fix her hair that very day. Firstly, I stopped by at Ikeja to buy the engagement ring I gave her and I got to her salon a bit late in the evening. I saw her pretty face physically for the first time and I became so obsessed about her.

The following day was a Sunday and we agreed to have our very first outing after service in church. So we went to shoprite at Ikeja and we spent sometime together, we had a lot of fun and decided that I should come and make my intentions known to her Dad the following day.

See, I live very far away from her family house, but it was as if I was going to the backyard of my house. So, off I went to her house the following day, it was on a Monday, I bought wine for her Dad and we were at the sitting room, my wife went to call her Dad, that we would like to talk with him. He came and I told him that I wanted to marry his daughter.

Her father was very happy for us and prayed for us. He said we should let him know on time when we decide on the date we want.

Engagement

So, I had planned to engage her in my church, I had notified the church about my plan, to engage her on a Tuesday service since it all started from there.

Therefore, the following day after meeting her Dad, I went to pick her at home, without letting her know my plans. She only knew we were going to church, but didn’t know I wanted to engage her.

We got to church and towards the end of the service, my Pastor chipped it in and called me out for a Testimony. I gave the testimony on how I met my wife and after that, I called her out from the congregation and I popped the question and she said yes.

I saw my wife physically for the first time on a Saturday and I engaged her the next Tuesday.

Thank God we are married now. We got married 7 months after the wedding proposal – 21st December, 2019.

It’s been God all the way.
