The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is a scheme set up by the Nigerian government to involve Nigerian graduates in nation building and the development of the country. Although, there is no military conscription in Nigeria, but since 1973 graduates of universities and later polytechnics; have been required to take part in the National Youth Service Corps program for one year.
NYSC was created on 22 May 1973 as an avenue for the reconciliation, reconstruction, and rebuilding of the nation after the civil war. It was established based on decree No. 24 that stated that the scheme was created “with a view to the proper encouragement; and development of common ties among the youths of Nigeria and the promotion of national unity”.
As a result, Every nigerian university graduate is expected to partake in the scheme, as service to the nation. So long as they are of Nigerian citizenship; regardless of their institution of study. Therefore, Nigerian who studied outside nigeria, return to nigeria and serve their nation through the NYSC scheme.
In an awesome development therefore, Nigerian students studying in the university of Arkansas decided to show their host school and fellow students a re enactment of the Nysc experience.
NYSC Re-Enactment
The Nigerian Students re-enacted the NYSC camp drills, mammy market, NYSC Passing Out Parade, presentation of NYSC discharge certificate, and other aspects of NYSC. They dressed up in NYSC uniforms as they re enacted several exciting parts of the experience.
