Shirley Fuller, a resilient African American grandmother hailing from North Carolina, has shattered barriers and surpassed expectations by achieving her third college degree at the remarkable age of 76. In 2017, at the age of 70, Fuller earned her Associate’s Degree from Wake Tech, marking a significant milestone in her academic journey. However, her joy was swiftly overshadowed by tragedy when a devastating fire engulfed her home, leaving her with nothing but a solitary textbook from Wake Tech as a tangible reminder of her educational pursuits.
In the wake of this calamity, Fuller refused to be deterred, viewing the survival of her textbook as a sign from a higher power. With unwavering determination and an indomitable spirit, she embarked on a path of renewal and transformation, earning a second degree from Wake Tech despite the formidable challenges she faced.
Undeterred by setbacks and fueled by her unyielding resolve, Fuller recently graduated from North Carolina Central University, a historically Black institution, with a Bachelor’s degree in behavioral and social sciences. In doing so, she not only achieved a personal triumph but also became the first in her family to attain a 4-year college degree, a milestone of immense significance and pride.
