Felipe Gomez Alonzo, 8, became the second person to die in US immigration custody. His father said they heard rumors that they would be allowed to cross into America if they provided they have a child.
The rumor was corroborated by his sister, who said her father seized the opportunity to travel after hearing a rumor. Nothing was said however of what the rumor was about beyond what has been mentioned.
The boy and his father traveled from Yalambojoch in Huehuetenango, a province in Guatemala. The customs and Border protection said he was looking like he could fall ill. He was diagnosed with a common cold at a medical center in New Mexico.
He was moved from El Paso, to Texas because of overcrowding by the authorities. His mother was saying through her stepdaughter that he spoke with him and the boy appeared fine and was seen playing with other children.
The secretary of Homeland Security Kirsten Nielsen has requested that more protective measures be taken following his death. This is the second death in recent times. Jakelin Caal, 7, also died in custody on December 8. Kirsten promised that all children apprehended will receive stricter medical examinations.
Also, the CDC has been taxed with looking into both incidents. Filipe’s father, however, is still in US custody.
