This year Steve Harvey, famous for crowning the wrong Miss Universe in 2015, was back as host of the pageant. This year a new record was set for number of participants, 94 contestants from as many countries took part in the prestigious event. The feature performance of the night was by renowned songwriter, producer and musician, Ne-Yo. Running commentaries throughout the duration of the show were runway coach, Lu Sierra, Supermodel Ashley Graham, and Carsson Kressley.

Shortly into the show the judges carefully narrowed down the women to 20 from 94 by selecting five each from the Americas, Asia/Africa, and Europe. To fill up the final five were five wild cards to choose from across the continents. To further reduce the group of 20, half of them were subjected to evening gown and swimsuits rounds. After this the number was halved to 10.
