Buju Banton, who is on his “Long Walk to Freedom” tour is expected to perform in Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday but hasn’t been granted permission to enter the country. The country’s Minister for Security has pledged to give the reggae artist a letter of exemption. The reason why the singer was denied access to TT was his criminal record.
Minister Stuart Young when asked about the issue said Banton had fallen short of the twin islands’ immigration laws. He said he has asked the concert organizers to send in an application to the Ministry of National Security saying he is willing to bend the rules for him.
In 2009, the reggae artist was arrested by agents of the United States Drug Enforcement Administration in Miami. Following this, he was charged by the US Attorney with possession of and conspiracy to distribute more than 5kg of cocaine. He was convicted in February 2011 and consequently slammed prison time.
The singer was released on December 7, 2018.
