The St. Kitts government has set a plan in motion to legalize the use of cannabis in the country. Cannabis is known to be advantageous medicinally and also for scientific purposes. The government came to this conclusion after a committee set up to run a survey on issues relating to marijuana use presented its report.
Though there are no established grounds for religious or recreational purposes, citizens caught in possession of the substance will no longer be arrested. Dr. Timothy Harris, the St. Kitts Prime Minister, said the government came to the conclusion based on the report presented by the National Marijuana Commission. He said this while relating the cabinet’s plans to the National Assembly.
It was recommended that the criminalization of the possession of cannabis be reviewed. It was also recommended that it be permitted to use cannabis for medicinal or scientific purposes which should be subject to a license and strict legislation. The commission also recommended that a household found in the possession of fewer than 15 grams of cannabis or growing less than 5 plants should only be penalized by a ticket, nothing more.
It was however sustained that the smoking of cannabis in public places attract punishment and driving under the influence of cannabis attract some form of penalty. The Prime Minister also stated that the sale of cannabis to citizens under the age of 18 will be strictly prohibited. He further explained that the Attorney General will work with the Parliament to ensure that the new rules regarding cannabis use and possession are properly structured and enforced.
