DR Congo conducted her general elections on December 30, 2018, and the results have just been released. The early hours before dawn last Thursday heralded the announcement of Felix Tshisekedi as the winner of the elections and President-Elect of the country.
Les trois candidats en lice à l’élection présidentielle ont obtenu:
1. Monsieur Félix Antoine TSHISEKEDI TSHILOMBO: 7.051.013 soit 38,57%.
2. Monsieur Martin FAYULU MADIDI: 6.366.732 soit 34,83%
3. Monsieur Emmanuel SHADARY: 4.357.359 soit 23,84%
Taux de participation: 47,56%— Ceni-rdc (@cenirdc) January 10, 2019
Tshisekedi, who is the son of long term opposition leader, Etienne Tshisekedi, was declared the winner of the elections by the overseeing body, CENI. In running for the elections, Tshisekedi had spear-headed a coalition of several political parties which had another heavyweight, Vital Karmehe, on their side.
His victory came as a surprise as he beat the two major candidates, ruling party coalition candidate, Emmanuel Ramazani Shadary, and candidate of the Lumuka coalition, Martin Fayulu. This announcement means the time is winding down for the incumbent DRC President, Joseph Kabila, who has been at the helm of affairs for seventeen years.
Felix Tshisekedi is set to be sworn in the next few weeks as the new President of the mineral-rich but poverty-stricken DR Congo.
