In a tragic turn of events on June 23, a Georgia police officer accidentally shot a 5-year-old Black girl while attempting to apprehend 25-year-old Rashauny Mike Palmer. The incident occurred during a high-speed chase and subsequent altercation at a BP gas station.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), the Dallas Police Department was attempting to arrest Palmer on charges of aggravated assault and kidnapping. After being handcuffed and placed in the back of a patrol car, Palmer somehow managed to escape and flee on foot. He then got into his Dodge Charger and drove off, prompting a high-speed chase down I-20 East, which ended when he crashed into a tractor-trailer.

Following the crash, Palmer attempted to carjack a BMW occupied by two adults and a child. During this altercation, a deputy fired at the vehicle, but instead of hitting Palmer, the bullet struck the 5-year-old girl sitting in the back seat. Fortunately, the child survived her injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Palmer was eventually apprehended and now faces multiple charges from various agencies, including criminal attempt to commit murder, kidnapping, and battery. The GBI has announced an independent investigation into the shooting.

The family of the injured child is demanding immediate action, calling for the dismissal of the deputy involved. The incident has sparked outrage and raised questions about the protocols followed during high-stress law enforcement situations.

This case underscores the critical need for thorough training and stringent measures to ensure the safety of innocent bystanders during police operations. The GBI’s investigation will be closely watched as the public and the family of the young girl seek justice and accountability.
