Lagos, Nigeria – Chidinma Modupe Okafor, a 30-year-old resident of Lagos, has made history by setting a new Guinness World Record for the longest crocheting marathon, clocking in an impressive 72 hours. Her marathon, fondly dubbed a “crochet-a-thon,” saw her creating a stunning white dinner gown, significantly surpassing the previous record of 34 hours and seven minutes held by Alessandra Hayden from the USA since 2021.
Okafor’s journey with crocheting began in her childhood, as she intricately crafted clothes and accessories. Her deep-rooted passion for the craft, combined with a desire to push her mental and physical limits, inspired her to undertake this record-breaking challenge.
“I aim to showcase the artistry and perseverance involved in this craft and promote awareness about crocheting and its benefits,” Okafor shared with Guinness World Records.
To achieve this remarkable feat, Okafor had to crochet continuously, starting a new ball of yarn immediately after finishing the previous one. According to Guinness World Records guidelines for marathon attempts, she was permitted only two hours of break per day—accumulated at a rate of five minutes per hour. During these brief intermissions, she could eat, rest, use the restroom, and change her clothes.

“My preparation for the record attempt involved rigorous training and mental conditioning. It also required physical endurance and strategizing to maintain a consistent pace while minimizing fatigue,” Okafor explained. She added that ensuring a steady supply of yarn and coordinating with her support staff were critical elements in maintaining the uninterrupted flow of her marathon.
Initially, Okafor planned to crochet a wedding gown. However, as exhaustion set in, she opted to create a dinner gown instead. “I couldn’t do extra hours,” she confessed, highlighting the immense physical and mental toll of the marathon.
Okafor drew inspiration from Hilda Baci, another Nigerian record-setter who completed the longest cooking marathon the previous year. This achievement not only underscores Okafor’s dedication and skill but also shines a spotlight on the vibrant and often underappreciated art of crocheting.
Okafor’s new Guinness World Record serves as a testament to her extraordinary talent, determination, and the boundless possibilities of human endurance.
