The great Black star of Africa is billed to take its place on the aviation map both in Africa and worldwide as the country will be launching a new airline in March 2019. Honorable Joseph Kofi Adda, the Ghanaian Minister for Aviation, announced that talks are underway with the biggest African carrier, Ethiopian Airways, as well as other investors to ensure March 2019 is a reality.
He further revealed that there is still a lot to be done with respect to sealing negotiations but they are hopeful that domestic flight operations can commence soonest. The minister made the announcement last Wednesday at a stakeholders meeting which held in Aburi, Ghana. The country’s carrier had ceased operations in 2004 and previous administrations had promised to revive the sector.
The country started its own airline soon after gaining independence with a capital of £400,000. At the time 60% of the total stake was owned by the Ghanaian government while BOAC owned the rest. The first aircraft used was a Havilland Heron which delivered a profit of $28,000 within the first year of operations.
Years later the government was forced to shut down the airline due to poor management, debts, and nepotism. The revival of the airline is expected to bring about a boost in tourism, reduction of air transportation prices, and provide employment. It is truly a thing of joy and we join the whole of Ghana to celebrate this giant leap.
