John Singleton, producer and director of several successful movies, suffered a mild stroke that has landed him in hospital. The veteran director had his hands on several 90’s hits like Baby Boy, Boyz n the Hood, Poetic Justice, Empire, and The People vs. O.J. Simpson. He checked himself into a hospital after flying in from Costa Rica.

He set a record as the first black director to be nominated for an Oscar in 1991 for his maiden feature which was shot in his native town, Los Angeles. His family announced on Saturday that he had been checked into ICU and was under intense medical care.

TMZ reports that “On Wednesday, April 17th our beloved son/father, John Singleton, suffered a stroke while at the hospital,” the statement reads. “We ask that privacy be given to him and our family at this time and appreciate all of the prayers that have been pouring in from his fans, friends, and colleagues.”

His is at the L.A. Cedars-Sinai Hospital where he is undergoing tests and rehabilitation. He has received messages via social media from friends and well-wishers.
