It’s been three days since 20 year old Daunte Wright was shot to death by now identified veteran of the Brooklyn center police; Kim Potter. Following the news making rounds that she mistook her gun for her taser, the former Minnesota police officer who shot and killed Daunte Wright; during a traffic stop has been charged with second-degree manslaughter in his death.
The charge is coming from the Washington County Attorney’s office; which will officially charge 26-year police department veteran Kim Potter with manslaughter. Potter has since resigned from the force.
In Minnesota, second-degree manslaughter applies when authorities allege a person causes someone’s death by; “culpable negligence,” according to CNN.
Someone convicted of this charge could face up to 10 years in prison and/or a fine up to $20,000.
A manslaughter charge will likely only intensify the strife in the community and the country between the public and police; including conversations about racial injustice and use-of-force, especially in the Black community.
Protests have taken place each night in and around Brooklyn Center since Daunte’s shooting.
Though Kim Potter has submitted a resignation letter, Mayor Mike Elliott said Tuesday he has not accepted her resignation, adding; “we’re doing our internal process to make sure that we are being accountable to the steps that we need to take.” Earlier, he told CBS he thought Potter should be fired.
And Currently, Kim Potter has been arrested and booked into the Hennepin County Jail Wednesday afternoon; where she is being held without bail.
