A Nigerian female soldier has been arrested for accepting a marriage proposal while on duty. This happened after a video detailing the incident emerged online. In the video a man is seen kneeling in front of the lady who is in military uniform as onlookers cheer them on.
Explaining the arrest, Nigerian army through its spokesperson, Gen Clement Nwachukwu noted that the lady had breached the military’s code of conduct and social media policy by “indulging in romance while in uniform.” He continued to note that, “Her conduct was prejudicial to good order and military discipline. The trainers’ task was to train the youth corps members and not to indulge in amorous relationship with any of them.”
The man proposing to the lady soldier in the video is said to be a trainee in Nigeria’s government scheme, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
Human Activists condemn the Arrest
Since the lady’s arrest, different Human rights groups have come out to condemn the act terming it as unfair and uncalled for. Some women group in Nigeria has accused the military of been discriminatory against the lady and not taking similar action against men soldiers involved in such acts in full military uniform.
