Oscars 2019: The Black Excellence and all the winners

The 91st Oscars have come and gone but the memories will linger for a long time, especially for the black community. We experienced black excellence at Sunday’s Oscars more than ever before as 6 black people went home with major awards.

Among the black winners were Spike Lee for his adapted screenplay, Black Kkklansman and Regina King for her role as supporting actress in “If Beale Street could talk.” Other are Mahershala Ali, for his role in “Green Book,” Ruth E. Carter and Hannah Beachly for their work in Black Panther.

Green Book, the quite controversial movie which had Ali and Viggo Mortenson as part of the lineup, won the award for Best Picture. Critics of the movie have however claimed that it had a very strong racial theme. The Oscars were themed by historic wins even though there was no real host. Spike Lee won his first Oscar while Ryan Coogler’s movie, Black Panther won across several categories.

In receiving his award, Lee who couldn’t hold back his excitement spoke about the 2020 US elections. He extended an invitation to all and sundry to do right by the elections. He was so excited that he jumped into the arms of Samuel L. Jackson who presented him the award. The crowd stood in an ovation to celebrate the win and the backstage press room wasn’t left out.

Bohemian Rhapsody was one of the biggest winners of the night regardless of the several controversies surrounding the production including the sexual assault allegations against Bryan Singer, the director. Rami Malek, the star of the movie, won the best actor award while the movie also gained honors in sound mixing, sound editing, and editing categories.

The huge budget movie, Black Panther, had Ruth E. Carter win her costume design category and Hannah Beachley win the production design category. With their wins, Beachley becomes the first African-American to be nominated and also to win her category and Carter is only the second black woman to win a non-acting Oscar.

Mahershala became the second black man, after Denzel Washington, to win two Oscars. He won his first Oscar in 2017 for his role in “Moonlight” and this year he’s at it again with his role in “Green Book.” He dedicated his award to his grandmother.
