St. Kitts is joining some of the other Caribbean countries to legalize the use of marijuana. This will mean that the growing or possession of marijuana will no longer be a crime. It will also become legal to use marijuana for medicinal purposes.
The announcement was made by the St. Kitts government based on the recommendations of the Nevis National Marijuana Commission. The recommendation was made known by the Prime Minister while addressing the National Assembly.
The new law dictates that an individual cannot be in possession of less than 5-grams of marijuana. Each household cannot have less than 5 plants of marijuana else a ticket will be issued. It has however been recommended that marijuana cannot be smoked in public places or while driving. Also, the substance cannot be sold to people younger than 18-years-old and it cannot be used for religious or recreational purposes.
There is also a prescription of how it should be used for medicinal or scientific purposes by the commission. Other countries to have legalized the substance in the Caribbean include Jamaica, Puerto Rice, Antigua, the Cayman Islands, Malta, and Bermuda.
