Veteran Jamaican broadcaster, Dorraine Samuels, has died after losing a prolonged battle with cancer. She was 59 at the time of her death and her death has brought many to tears.
The news of her death was broken by her longtime employer, RJR/Gleaner Communications Group. The company said it was indeed saddened by her death. She had only recently undergone a surgical procedure but ended up succumbing to cancer and losing the battle last Tuesday afternoon.
Dorraine had been the host of the TVJ nightly news, a role she had handled till January this year. After placing fifth in the Miss Jamaica pageant of 1980, she joined RJR. It is said that she was discovered by Alan Magnus, another veteran broadcaster who she forged a solid partnership with on the morning radio for a couple of decades.
Condolences and tributes have been pouring in since the announcement of her death. Daryl Vaz, one of the cabinet ministers said she was loved by all and it was a very sad day in Jamaica’s history. the Finance Minister, Dr. Nigel Clarke also paid his tributes saying when people are sad that your lap of the race is over then you are surely a legend. He prayed that the soul of the departed veteran rest in peace.
