Netflix is getting more interested in original african content; as its upcoming series “Queen Sono” is set to air. While Netflix has acquired several programs from the continent, Queen Sono is the first series from Africa that it has developed from inception. It previously acquired the South African series Shadow. As well as several Nollywood films including Genevieve Nnaji’s directorial debut Lionheart, and Atlantics from Senegalese filmmaker Mati Diop.

“Queen Sono” is the first original African series commissioned by Netflix. Therefore, as part of an effort by the streaming service to increase its appeal to viewers there, analysts say. Hence, Netflix seeks to expand in Africa as it nears “a saturation point” for subscriptions in many developed markets. Says an associate director at market research firm IHS Markit.

The lead character of Queen Sono is “a female African hero for the times,” says Kagiso Lediga. The show’s South African creator.

The Netflix series is designed to be a pan-African thriller; that’s an entertaining and smart political drama, Lediga says.

“If it appeals to all Africans, it appeals to the world,” he says. “Those people and stories have always been there but never seen as viable for a global audience.”

The show, which is being described as the streaming giant’s “first African original,” is a crime thriller that takes place in South Africa, specifically.

According to a description from Shadow & Act; Thusi plays “a highly trained top spy in a South African agency. Whose purpose is to better the lives of African citizens. While taking on her most dangerous mission yet, she must also face changing relationships in her personal life.”

Queen Sono is set to premiere on February 28.
