During Constitution Day, an 8th-grade English teacher at Winterville Charter Academy told her black students to raise their hands. After this, the teacher told the black students that they would be her, “field slaves” were it not for the constitution.

Parents of the said black students did not take these words lightly. Tension arose forcing the school principal, Annastasia Ryan to send out a memo to the affected families. The memo read, “On Monday evening, it was brought to the attention of school administration that a racially insensitive lesson regarding the importance of the constitution of the United States was carried out during an English lesson on constitution day.”

This memo received a lot of negativity on social media with many parents noting it is not the first time the school is being racially biased. The said teacher has since resigned and the school is planning to offer culturally sensitive training to its staff moving forward.
