Brooklyn-born Horne had a very successful career as an actress, singer, and dancer. She was most known for her role as Selina Rogers in the 1943 film Stormy Weather.

 

EARTHA KITT


Actress, dancer, and singer Kitt was the definition of a triple threat. Most known for her role as Catwoman on the television series Batman and her iconic Christmas song “Santa Baby,” Kitt had a very long career in Hollywood up until her passing in 2008.

 

ELLA FITZGERALD


Fitzgerald was one successful jazz singer and musician with 13 Grammys and over 20 other nominations.

 

NINA SIMONE


Simone was a very successful singer-songwriter as well as a prominent figure in the Civil Rights Movement. One of her greatest achievements is her song, “To Be Young, Gifted, and Black,” which has received enormous amounts of recognition.

 

DOROTHY DANDRIDGE


Dandridge was one of the most successful African-American actresses of her time. She was the first black woman to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her lead role in the 1954 movie Carmen Jones.
