You can be sure we are in for a thrilling movie in “Queen and Slim” as the crew has a pedigree for excellence. The movie is to be directed by Melina Matsoukas, who directed “Insecure,” and the script was written by Lena Waithe, the “Emmy-winning writer.”
The feature film was announced in July and we were thrilled to find out that Daniel Kaluuya would be starring. Some days ago anticipation for “Queen and Slim” grew to its peak as it was announced that upcoming actress Jodie Turner Smith will be starring alongside Kaluuya in the upcoming love story.
Matsoukas has a great reputation as a director, working on projects with Beyonce, Rihanna, and Solange, as well as several others. The gifted director took to her Instagram page to share the news saying, “Queen with a crown that be down for whatever,” along with a picture of both stars. In her post she made reference to the movie title and “You’re all I need” by Mary J. Blige and Method Man.
At its first announcement Melina Matsoukas described the movie as “a film that defines black love as a revolutionary act. It shows that our union is the greatest weapon against the assault on black people in America.”
This is a summary of the movie plot (gotten from Shadow & Act:)
“A complex film with many layers, Queen & Slim, explores America’s social and political climate through the lens of a genre-defying love story. When a Black man and Black woman on a first date are pulled over by a police officer at a traffic stop, their life goes awry. Forced to kill him in self-defense, rather than turn themselves in, they must go on the run to Cuba.”
“Queen and Slim” is billed for release in November 2019, but before then you can go on Netflix and catch Jodie Smith on the upcoming series, “Nightflyers” by George R.R. Martin.
