Marvel’s “Black Panther” is arguably one of the most famous movies to be released in 2018, especially among blacks. The list of nominees for this year’s Oscars was released on Tuesday and Black Panther tops it with a total of 7 nominations.
The movie is nominated for the most coveted Oscar prize, best picture. This is the first time a superhero movie will be nominated for this award. There are eight other nominees for this award including “Bohemian Rhapsody” and musicale, “A Star is Born.”
This year, the academy awards is taking a new turn with the inclusion of popular movies on the nomination list. Previously, movies chosen were those with small audiences and independent dramas. Last August, the academy proposed creating a new category for popular movies. It didn’t take long before the idea was scrapped due to the belief that it might result in a two-tier or caste system.
It is clear that the popular movies have stepped up their game and the academy acknowledges their contributions to film making and the talent involved in making such movies. It is recorded that last year’s show had the lowest attendance ever, this is largely blamed on the kind of movies nominated.
Black Panther is the first superhero movie to be dominated by a black cast and it has been lauded for portraying Africa’s beauty and pride to theaters worldwide. The movie was the second highest-grossing the world and the highest-grossing in both the US and Canada.
The Oscars hold on February 24, 2019, and it is normal for movies nominated to get a lot of ticket sales at the cinemas.
