In a historic moment at the 2024 Tony Awards, Dede Ayite became the first Black woman to win the prestigious award for Best Costume Design of a Play. Ayite received the accolade for her work on “Jaja’s African Hair Braiding,” a play that delves into the lives of West African immigrant hair braiders in a bustling Harlem salon. The play, penned by Jocelyn Bioh, opened in October 2023 and closed the following month, but not before making a significant impact.
“Jaja’s African Hair Braiding” was nominated for five Tony Awards, highlighting its critical acclaim. The play explores themes of community, identity, and the immigrant experience, set against the backdrop of a Harlem hair salon where intricate hairstyles are crafted amid the challenges faced by the characters.
During her acceptance speech, Ayite expressed gratitude to her family, including her brother cheering her on from Ghana, and acknowledged her collaborators. She praised Bioh for writing such a powerful piece and extended her thanks to the costume shops and makers who helped bring her vision to life. “Without them, I would not be here and the show would not look as amazing as it does,” she said.

In the pressroom, Ayite reflected on the significance of her win, describing it as “huge.” She emphasized the importance of persistence and dedication for those starting in the industry. “People like me that are just starting out and aren’t sure and are fearful… I’m just hopeful that this moment says, ‘Just keep at it.’ You know, tell the stories that matter to you, tell the story that you find value in, and the moment will meet you,” she said.
Ayite also highlighted the collective effort behind her success, noting that her win was not just a personal achievement but a victory for her supportive community. “It’s not just about me, but we did it: the community that supports me, the community of people that love me each day and cheer me on,” she added.
The 2024 Tony Awards were held at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center in New York, celebrating outstanding achievements in theater. Ayite’s groundbreaking win marks a significant milestone in the representation and recognition of Black talent in the theater industry.
