The two sides had previously met in the qualifiers but it was the Bafana Bafana who got the better part of their Nigerian counterpart. Odion Ighalo, who played Bongani Zungu on for the South African goal had earlier warned that they should expect something different. A Percy Tau cross struck the back of Ighalo and VAR decided Zungu’s 71th minute goal should stand.
A cautious Nigeria will dominate possession without creating clear cut chances until Samuel Chukwueze gave Nigeria the lead in the 27th minute after controlling an Alex Iwobi cross to score at the second attempt. Man of the match, Chukwueze is the youngest scorer at the Total Africa Cup of Nations (20 years and 49 days).
Many Egyptians supported Nigeria since Bafana Bafana dispatched the hosts to set up this encounter with the Super Eagles.

There were varying hopes when Nigeria lost to Madagascar in the group stage of the competition with many feeling they were done. However, this win now means Nigeria is the team to beat and extends their record over South Africa who have never beaten them at the Cup of Nations.
