The President of Guyana, David Granger, invited the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) for a meeting to discuss the forthcoming elections. He has also invited the leader of the opposition for another meeting to discuss the same issue.
GECOM had written a letter to the Presidency after a vote held last week which favored a postponement of the elections. According to the Minister of State, Joseph Harmon, the President had no choice but to invite the officials of the election-organizing body to discuss the regional and general elections. GECOM had said the reason for the postponement was the lack of funds.
The elections were meant to be held by March 19 as a vote of no confidence was passed on the present government in December 2018. According to the Guyana constitution, elections must hold within 90 days when a vote of no confidence is passed.
The president has also asked to meet with the Opposition Leader on March 6, 2019, at the Ministry of the Presidency. The Minister of State said he had been mandated to write both invitation letters by the president who is currently in Cuba to continue his cancer treatments.
