I stared at the lady on my desk, as though I wanted my eyes to uproot her from the chair. I reluctantly dragged my feet and followed the manager. My heart struggled to free itself from my rib cage in heavy beats. Have I been fired? Have I been Demoted? I was so worried and my belly rumbled in gripping fear.
The manager ushered me into his chilling room. The air smelt of “you are about to be fired” with a tinge of “We wish you well in future”. Despite the coolness of his office, I could feel sweat drops trickling down the sides of my face.
“Have a seat Ene, you look worried” The manager had a wry smile on his face as he asked me to sit.
I sat down and shook my legs in impatience. I gnashed my teeth and waited.
“Here, open and read it”. I didn’t know why the manager decided to use me as a practical lesson on “how to be an arsehole”.
I collected the letter and slowly opened it as i swallowed hard in fear.
At the end of the letter, I had mixed feelings. But I kept my peace and waited for the manager to speak.
The Verdict For Ene
“Ene, we have looked through your records and indeed you are one of our best. As such, we have decided that, you extend your brain and brawn to other struggling branches. As the head of customer service, you are retaining your position but not at our lagos branch anymore. You have been transferred to the federal capital territory, Abuja”.
I cleared my throat, he continued; “that letter contains all the information you require. You are to report at the Abuja Branch next week Monday. So, you have all the time you need to get ready and settle”.
I muttered a “Thank you sir” and I didn’t wait to acknowledge his “Congratulations” as I walked out.
I got back home, took of all my clothes and lay naked with my legs spread wide apart.
My mother was feeding me pounded yam as she kept telling me “This food would bring you a husband” and I ate hungrily.
The husband must have manifested itself as a shadow cast over my face jolted me up from the dream.
Right there, standing over me, was Obinna. My legs were still spread apart. In seconds I got up and reached for any available clothing.
How did you get in here? My voice thundered.
