Jessica Nabongo, a Ugandan, has clinched the title of being the first black woman to visit every country on planet earth.
From the age of 6, Jessica has been touring the world. Though born in America, both her parents are Ugandan nationals and she has used both passports to travel the world.
Another interesting thing to know is the regularity of her travels.
According to a report by Africa News, Jessica Nabongo decided to embark on the global tour in 2017. She had travelled to 60 countries at that time, which means she had journeyed to 135 countries in a space of 2 years and six months. A-MAZING!
In an interview with OkayAfrica, she explained the inspiration behind her world tour. “I began my journey to every country of the world because I am a geography nerd, curious about other cultures, and want to show the world through a lens that we rarely view it from – that of a black woman.”
Nabongo also elaborated on her desire to change the global narrative and perception surrounding a lot of destinations, particularly in Africa- and highlight “that many countries are dangerous, that people are miserable, that you cannot have a nice, luxury, vacations on the continent.”
While being interviewed by ABC, she encouraged those who wanted to achieve a similar quest to do so on a reflective note. “People took a photo of me in Bali and they say, “That’s cool, I want to go to Bali,” Jessica said. “But everyone needs to ask themselves, “What is your why? Why do you want to do what it is you want to do?” I hope people would be more reflective than reactive. Not just like, “Oh Bali, that’s a cute picture, I want to go.”
The Ugandan-American landed in the Republic of Seychelles on Sunday 6th October, which was her last country to visit out of a total number of 195 countries. Her family and friends went with her to the East African archipelago to celebrate the historic feat.
