The festive season is here again and all over the world retailers are busy making lots of money from festive buyers. A unique store has opened up her doors to festive buyers in London, somewhere on the activity-ridden Shoreditch high-street.
There is something really interesting about this store however, it exclusively sells products by women of color. The name of the store is Janet’s List and it has two major goals. First is to provide a connection between customers and brands established by women of color. The second is to ensure that newer brands get a platform to grow and be patronized.
In case you were wondering when this store was founded, it was established by a Kenyan entrepreneur, Janet Oganah, in 2017. Janet established the business to meet a specific need, promote brands and products developed by women of color. When asked to share her motivation for establishing Janet’s List, she said she understood the challenges faced by women of color in growing their brands and gaining acceptance. To this end she thought of creating a meeting point between these brands and prospective customers and the best place in her opinion was a central London space.
One of her customers said the idea was exactly what they needed, a place to buy items they could relate by people they could relate to. Products available at Janet’s List include handmade jewelry, African fabrics, cosmetics, food products, and cards. The store does not just seek to promote the products but the rich diversity of the Africans living in the diaspora.
