67 year old Musa Hasahya, from Lusaka in Uganda, has hesitantly asked his 12 wives to start using contraception so the family can buy more food to eat.
“My income has become lower and lower over the years due to the rising cost of living and my family has become bigger and bigger.” He said.
“I’m not having any more children. I’ve seen the bad financial situation and am now taking the birth control pill.” He further lamented.
It’s interesting to note that Musa Hasahya has no regrets and would not advise against marrying numerous women, despite the crushing effects of his polygamous lifestyle that are dragging him down.
“I married one woman after another. How can a man be satisfied with one woman?” he quizzed.
His ability to keep all of his ladies together in one home, allowing for constant supervision and preventing them from being taken by other men, is another intriguing aspect of his story.
“All my wives live together in the same house.
“It’s easy for me to monitor them and also stop them eloping with other men in this village,” Musa Hasahya is quoted to have revealed.
One of Hasahya’s wives, Zulaika, who has 11 children, lamented the extreme hardships they have had to undergo due to the size of their family and insufficient income.
Polygamy is legally recognized in Uganda, and the use of contraceptives is reportedly seen as a sign of promiscuity, but under the circumstances, she has no option but to adopt it.
It is again reported that most of Hasahya’s numerous children aged between six and 51, live with him on his farm which serves as their place of abode.
Some of his wives are young women, and his eldest child is reported to be 21 years older than his youngest wife.
