The people of Botswana had returned Masisi as President after the announcement of election result.
Mokgweetsi Masisi victory was made public on Friday morning by the Country’s Chief Justice, Terrence Rannowane who doubles as the Convener of elections according to the Constitution.
With this announcement, he has officially been declared the winner and President of Botswana after Masisi’s Botswana Democratic party,(BDP) attained the 29 Constituencies out of 57 required to form government.
The Opposition Umbrella for Democratic Change has 12, the new Botswana Patriotic Front who was backed by former President Ian Khama- has three seats while the Alliance of Progressive took one.
From reports, the BDP party secured its 29th consistency in Boteti west as at 7am on Friday. Following Botswana’s Constitution, the chief justice announced the winner of the elections shortly after.
“Although vote counting is still ongoing, the numbers of parliament seats attained so far by the BDP obliges me to declare Mokgweetsi Masisi as the elected president of Botswana,“I, Chief Justice Terence Rannowane, declare Mokgweetsi Masisi as the winner of the election and president of Botswana.”
The President, Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi is the fifth and current President of Botswana, serving since 2018. He once served as Minister of Education since 2014, and previously he was Minister of Presidential Affairs and Public Administration from 2011 to 2014.
He was elected under the platform of BDP during the second attempt to Parliament in 2009 after the first unsuccessful effort. He was promptly appointed as Assistant minister for Presidential Affairs and Public Administration in October 2009 and subsequently Minister.
He was re-elected to his seat in Parliament after in October 2014, and he was appointed as Minister of Education and Skills Development Masisi was appointed by the President Ian Khama as Vice President of Botwsana on 12 November 2014 while also serving his post as Minister of Education till he became the 5th president of the Country.
