Following the release of her latest album “B7,” Brandy recently opened up with a shocking confession regarding her past mental health. In a new interview, Brandy revealed that she has previously struggled with severe depression and even contemplated suicide.
In an exclusive interview with @PEOPLE, Brandy opens up like never before and lets fans in on a part of her life that they likely weren’t aware of. She confirmed that in the past she faced severe struggles with depression that were so serious, she even thought about ending her life at one point. She explained that things came to a head in 2006 when she was involved in a tragic car accident (she wasn’t charged with any crime) that claimed the life of a 38-year-old woman.
Brandy discussed her mental state during that time, stating:
“I remember laying in bed super depressed. I [told] myself, ‘So, you’re just going to go out like this? That’s wack. You have a daughter. If you can’t do it for yourself, do it for her because this is not the way to leave a mark in her life.’”
She goes on to credit her 18-year-old daughter Sy’rai for giving her the strength to eventually break out of her depression;
“If Sy’rai wasn’t here, I wouldn’t be either. The place that I was in, it just felt like I wasn’t going to make it through.”
Brandy also acknowledged how therapeutic music has been for her, specifically a track on her new album titled “Bipolar.” “I was thinking, ‘Did I go too deep? Did I go too far in what I was singing about?’ But I didn’t dwell on those thoughts,” she said. She credits her improved mental health to therapy, journaling, meditation and her faith.
Brandy’s album “B7” is available now on all streaming platforms.
