This weekend an unusual gathering will be taking place on the US Gulf Coast. It is a coming together of the descendants of the final set of slaves to be shipped into the US. The event is set to hold in the very community that used to be a hub of freed slaves after the Civil War, Africatown, Alabama.
Currently, just a few of the original settlers of the community are still residents as the community has become economically depressed. The area has constantly lost members of its population due to migration and several other factors.
After the slave trade was abolished in 1860, slaves were still illegally smuggled into the US through Alabama. After the civil war, a couple of the slaves settled in the old plantation and established a community in the area. The organizers of the gathering are expecting that the move will attract more attention to Africatown.
