Grammy award winning gospel artiste, Lecrae, has given himself a mixture of Nigerian Yoruba and Igbo names, after finding out his ancestors came from Nigeria.
Taking to his Instagram page on Friday December 16, the ‘Jireh’ hit maker said that his Nigerian name is ‘Adewale Obinna,’ after visiting Nigeria for a concert.
He said a DNA test carried out shows his ancestors came from Nigeria and that he has experienced love and kindness like no other while visiting Nigeria.
Lecrae, a Grammy-winning gospel artiste, adopted a combination of Igbo and Yoruba names from Nigeria after learning that his origins were from Nigeria. After performing at a concert in Nigeria, the “Jireh” hitmaker revealed on Friday, December 16 via Instagram that he has taken the name “Adewale Obinna”.
According to Lecrae, a DNA test revealed that his ancestors originated from Nigeria and that when visiting Nigeria, he encountered compassion and kindness unlike anything he had ever known.
He wrote;
First time in Nigeria. My DNA test confirms this is one of the countries my ancestors were brought from. I have experienced love like none other. Care, kindness, grace, and love.
I came here as LECRAE.
But my Nigerian name is
Adewale Obinna.
43 year old Lecrae Devaughn Moore, better known by his stage name Lecrae, was born on October 9, 1979. He is a rapper, singer, songwriter, record and film producer, record executive, actor, and entrepreneur.
In addition to being the co-founder and president of the independent record label Reach Records, he was also an investor and co-owner of the audio production software MXD and a co-founder of the film production company 3 Strand Films. He was also the co-founder and president of the now-defunct non-profit organization ReachLife Ministries.
