Isan, Idris Elba’s daughter made major headlines when she was chosen as the Ambassador for the last Golden Globes. She has made good use of the platform offered her by that opportunity to speak about the impact of mental illness on black communities. She did this at a luncheon which was organized last week in Beverly Hills.
Miss Elba said her mother, Hanne “Kim” Norgaard, had opened up to her about two years ago. Kim was married to Elba from 1999 to 2003. Medical reports have disclosed that she has been in a battle with depression, bipolar disorder, and chronic anxiety. Isan confessed to PEOPLE that dealing with mental illness was a very difficult road to pass through, one of the hardest things she’s had to deal with all her life.
According to Isan, she has developed a stronger relationship with her mother since the disclosure, which is great for both of them. Meher Tatna, the president of Hollywood-Foreign Press Association, was so inspired by Isan’s speech that she donated $50,000 to the Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation on behalf of Miss Elba.
She also said the struggle with losing her self-confidence as a result of bullying. She was able to overcome those issues by simply being herself, an act that has brought her lots of compliments.
