The last United States elections has seen so much of history being made. Joe Neguse is not left out as he has become the first Eritrean-American to be elected into the United States Congress.
The Coloradoan reports that Joe Neguse achieved the milestone as the first Eritrean-American to be elected into Congress in the last elections. Neguse, who is a Democrat, is from Lafayette in Colorado won the elections to represent the Second Congressional District of Colorado.
Asides being the first Eritrean-American to be elected into Congress, Neguse is also the first black man from Colorado to become a congressman. He beat Republican Peter Yu by a margin of 64 percent to 31 percent at the polls. Neguse’s predecessor is U.S. Rep. Jared Polis.
Neguse, who is just 34, is set to be the youngest congressman from Colorado and one of the youngest in the Congress as a whole. His parents migrated from Eritrea after being granted asylum in the U.S. not long after they gained citizenship.
In a statement Neguse said, “With so much vitriol right now in Washington and our political system, we must remember that, while fear is contagious, so is hope.”
Neguse is a supporter of single payer health care, protection of undocumented immigrants who got into the U.S. as children and is a frontliner advocating the impeachment of Donald Trump.
