Kaylan Haywood Jr. is just 19-years old but is about to realize his lifelong dream of holding public office. In a few weeks, Haywood will officially become the youngest State legislator Wisconsin has ever had and by extension, the youngest in the whole of America.
In an interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Haywood stated that his major asset is his age. He believes a lot of people will provide him the support he needs though he is also expecting many others to look down on his abilities.
His love for public office was first expressed when he was 8-years old and since then there’s been no going back. At 14 he was elected into the Milwaukee Youth Council. In the last few years of high school, he was the head of the student body as well. The universe smiled on his public service when he won the 5-way primaries for the State legislative seat in August.
Haywood has no Republican contender so it is safe to say when the elections hold in January, he will triumph as the youngest lawmaker from the 16th District in Wisconsin.
Though he might be too young to do a whole lot like drink alcohol, gamble, or even rent a car, he will be in the position the vote for or against them and many others he can’t benefit from as yet.
Haywood has said the first item on his agenda is to amend the law requiring high school students to excel in a civics exam. He also plans to propose that registration to vote be made mandatory for 18-year olds. He sees this as necessary since the turnout of voters, especially in Wisconsin, is usually low.
