The music sensation, Tiwa Savage, took the award at the ceremony which held at the Bilbao Exhibition Center, Bilbao, Spain. There were so many celebrities present at the event and the biggest winner of the night was Camila Cabello who is of Cuban-American origin.
The Best African Act category was introduced to the MTV EMA awards in 2005 with the motive of fostering multicultural collaborations and alliances from different parts of the globe. Prior to Tiwa’s win three other Nigerians have won the awards. Tu Baba in 2005, D’Banj in 2007 and 2012, and Davido in 2017.
This year’s MTV EMA awards saw Tiwa Savage triumph in a category filled with several world class acts like Fally Ipupa, Distruction Boyz, Shekinah, and Davido. She dedicated the award to African women and young ladies aspiring to reach such heights on a post on Instagram.
In her post she said, “Almighty God, you are so faithful. My savage soldiers did it for me. You have stuck with me through the roller coasters. Thank you. To my amazing team, this is just the beginning. African women, this is for us. I have been through a lot but I have kept my head up and weathered the storm because I know some little girl somewhere is dreaming like I did.”
